Low Beginner Japanese – In-Person Class
For learners in Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, Napa & the Bay Area
Course Dates:
This in-person Japanese course for low beginners runs from May 12 to June 16. Classes are held weekly in small groups of 3–6 students to create a supportive, highly interactive learning environment with ample speaking time and individual attention.
If only two students enroll, the class will still run but will be shortened to five weeks instead of the usual six.
Our campus in Berkeley is easily accessible to students commuting from Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, and Napa.
About the Instructor
Mari, originally from Gunma Prefecture, Japan, is a certified Japanese language instructor through Seisa University in Yokohama. She holds a degree in French Literature from Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo and later pursued studies in International Economics in Toronto.
Mari brings a rich international background, having worked in Tokyo, Toronto, Singapore, and Boston before settling in the Bay Area in 2005. With over six years of teaching experience, she has helped both children and adults learn Japanese in classroom and online settings.
Known for her warm, adaptable, and student-focused approach, Mari designs lessons that are personalized, engaging, and confidence-building. Her teaching integrates real-life relevance, cultural context, and humor, making every class welcoming and productive.

What You’ll Learn
Building on beginner-level skills, this course introduces key grammar points, practical vocabulary, and fundamental conversational patterns for everyday use. You’ll learn how to:
Construct complete sentences using essential grammar
Expand vocabulary for daily topics like food, shopping, travel, and introductions
Improve pronunciation and listening skills through partner work and group activities
Practice conversations in realistic situations
Read and write basic hiragana (and optionally katakana)
Lessons are interactive and communicative, with regular speaking practice, listening exercises, and cultural insights woven into the learning experience.
By the End of the Course
You’ll be able to:
Speak more confidently in daily situations
Understand basic spoken Japanese at a conversational pace
Create your own sentences with greater accuracy
